\nReflecting on Jesus’ parable of the sower, Uli Chi<\/strong> writes: <\/p>\n

… there are two kinds of uses for seeds. <\/p>\n

One use is to make something that can be appreciated and enjoyed for its own sake \u2013 for example, grains of wheat ground into flour to make bread. We regularly (and rightly) give thanks for that kind of seed. <\/p>\n

But there is another, darker purpose for seeds, one which Jesus focuses on in this parable. That darker work finds its fulfillment not through the seed\u2019s life but through its death. <\/p>\n

As Jesus himself says, \u201cVery truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.\u201d (John 12:24) <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

O God,
\nWe gather together in Your presence with expectation,
\nhungry for an encounter with You,
\neager to hear Your Word.<\/p>\n

Open our eyes and ears to the presence of Your Holy Spirit.
\nMay the seeds of Your Word scattered among us this morning
\n      fall on fertile soil.
\nMay they take root in our hearts and lives,
\n      and produce an abundant harvest
\n      of good words and deeds.<\/p>\n

We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ,
\nour teacher and our Lord.
\nAmen.<\/p>\n
