\nGeraniums in my kitchen garden<\/em><\/span>
\n <\/p>\n

A meditation<\/h3>\n

How hard it is to know
\nwhen the pot is too small for the plant.
\nSome plants need to be contained, held very close.
\nOthers cannot be crowded.
\nI don’t know when I myself am too pot-bound,
\nlacking courage to be replanted,
\nto take the shock of new soil,
\nto feel into the unknown and to take root in it.<\/p>\n

This drying out, this self-crowding
\nsneaks up on me. It seems I must always feel
\na little wilted or deadened before I know
\nI’m too pot-bound.<\/p>\n

This african violet must first be cut
\nand divided. The knife goes through the root.
\nThe white flesh exposed and moist
\nlooks as if it is bleeding.
\nIt must have soil immediately
\nso the plant won’t die.
\nThen water. Water taken in from below.
\nThis water must seep up into the plant
\nby infusion. Then comes the waiting
\nas the shock registers.
\nDays and weeks of waiting.<\/p>\n

It will be months before a new leaf appears.
\nPerhaps the plant won’t make it.
\nSo it is when the time comes for me to be cut
\nand divided so as to grow again.<\/p>\n

Help me to see this not as a problem
\nbut as a process. Help me surrender
\nto the growth that only comes with pain,
\nwith division, with helplessness, with waiting.
\nEspecially the days and weeks of waiting.<\/p>\n
