My father, a recent immigrant to South Africa without any family nearby to provide support, faced the prospect of losing both his wife and unborn child. The medical team opted to leave me in place. I imagine the nuns at St Joseph&#8217;s Maternity Hospital, who knew my mother as a nurse and former colleague and now as a prospective mother and patient, prayed us through the crisis. I was born full term a month later.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3v6x691yvn532gp2411ezrib-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/default\/files\/story_images_3\/20130320_E_MotherChild.png?w=840&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Herb Lubalin's logo for a magazine that never saw the light of day, \"Mother and Child\"\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Mother and child (1966) by Herb Lubalin<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Fearfully and wonderfully made<\/h3>\n<p>Many times I come back to these words from Psalm 139 &#8211; a truth beyond comprehension, revealed to affirm us in the body and in the faith:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For you created my inmost being;<br \/>\nyou knit me together in my mother\u2019s womb.<br \/>\nI praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;<br \/>\nyour works are wonderful,<br \/>\nI know that full well.<br \/>\nMy frame was not hidden from you<br \/>\nwhen I was made in the secret place,<br \/>\nwhen I was woven together in the depths of the earth.<br \/>\nYour eyes saw my unformed body;<br \/>\nall the days ordained for me were written in your book<br \/>\nbefore one of them came to be.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Psalm 139:13-16 (NIVUK)<\/p>\n<h3>In the body<\/h3>\n<p>The phrase &#8220;body of water&#8221; is also a reference to the role water plays in the human body.
