This prayer sheet<\/span> is a response to these words by Christian theologian and author, Frederick Buechner (pronounced BEEK-ner): <\/p>\n

“Go where your best prayers take you.”<\/span> <\/p>\n

The words appear in Buechner’s book, Telling Secrets – A Memoir<\/em>, about his encounters with God’s presence in both the scary and sad as well as in the joyful moments of his life. <\/p>\n

A. CALL TO WORSHIP<\/strong>
\n(based on John 3:16<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n

For God so loved the world;
\nThe sparrows, the mountain lions,
\nthe fish and the people. <\/strong><\/p>\n

For God so loved the world;
\nIn success and failure,
\nin sickness and health,
\nin mediocrity and extraordinary. <\/strong><\/p>\n

For God so loved the world;
\nEnough to become one of us,
\nenough to suffer along with us,
\nenough to offer new life for us. <\/strong><\/p>\n

For God so loved the world;
\nLet us worship God! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

B. READING<\/strong><\/p>\n

1 Peter 4 : 7-11<\/a><\/p>\n\n

C. THE CALL OF COMPASSION<\/strong><\/p>\n

If we\u2019re honest, compassion does not come easy to us, God.
\nWe see others who struggle; <\/strong>
\nthose without homes, or food;
\nthose dying from curable diseases,
\nsimply because they can\u2019t get access to the medicine they need; <\/strong>
\nthose who have lost loved ones through death or circumstance,
\nand long for human companionship;
\nthose who are persecuted and judged because of their difference; <\/strong>
\nthose who are facing the awful consequences
\nof bad choices they have made;
\nand those who must live with the consequences of choices
\nthat others make that impact their lives. <\/strong> <\/p>\n

It all just feels like it\u2019s too much, and there\u2019s nothing we can do.
\nBut, we know that\u2019s not true
\nWe know that compassion is enough;
\nthat when we allow ourselves to feel,
\ncompassion will lead us to do what we can,
\nand that this will make a difference. <\/strong><\/p>\n

And so, we pray first for ourselves:
\nsoften our hearts, and still our fears,
\nand lead us into those acts of compassion that we are capable of doing.<\/strong>
\nAnd then we pray for all of these others
\nwhose lives can be changed through small, simple acts of care.
\nDisturb us, and others like us,
\nuntil we finally step up and play our part in the saving of your world;
\nand that enough of us would answer your call,
\nthat the needs of the hurting ones may be met.
\nIn Jesus\u2019 Name,
\nAmen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

D. LET US PRAY<\/strong>
\n“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”<\/em> (John 14:12)<\/p>\n

E. PRAYER OF DEDICATION<\/strong>
\n(inspired by Psalm 23<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want;
\nWe believe in the goodness of God.
\nWe believe God hears and responds to our needs.
\nWe believe God responds to all children everywhere. <\/strong><\/p>\n

He makes me lie down in green pastures.
\nHe leads me beside still waters, he restores my soul.
\nWe are grateful that we’ve been blessed with enough water.
\nBut we know that many do not have enough.
\nNot enough water, not enough food, not enough peace. <\/strong><\/p>\n

He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
\nToo many children do not see God’s righteousness.
\nToo many children watch violence, taste hunger, feel fear.
\nToo many children cry from the unspeakable horror of war. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
\nI will fear no evil; for you are with me;
\nyour rod and your staff, they comfort me.
\nTo become involved is risky.
\nPain is often contagious.
\nOur hearts may be broken and our lives may be threatened.
\nYet we hear God calling and we can no longer hide. <\/strong><\/p>\n

You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies;
\nyou anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.
\nOur steps may be small and timid.
\nWe may read a book, write a letter, or make a gift.
\nBut each tiny step is blessed by God and multiplies. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
\nand I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
\nGod is more relentless than war.
\nGod is more pervasive than hatred.
\nGod is more insistent than despair.
\nAmen. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n
