The theme of the month for September is \u201cRefuge\u201d<\/strong>. For the first post in this series I\u2019ve selected a Call to Worship by Joanna Haradar posted on the Spacious Faith<\/a> website in 2013, inspired by Psalm 46. The words could have been written yesterday.<\/p>\n

Call to Worship<\/h3>\n

inspired by Psalm 46<\/em><\/p>\n

The earth shakes, the mountains quake
\n  \u2014 tempting our hearts to fear.
\nGod is our refuge and strength,
\na very present help in trouble.<\/span>
\nStorms rage, winds swirl
\n  \u2014 destroying schools, hospitals, homes.
\nStill, God is our refuge and strength,
\na very present help in trouble. <\/span>
\nViolence comes to light in our communities
\nand violence continues around the world
\n  \u2014 causing us to wonder if our prayers for peace are futile.
\nYet God is our refuge and strength,
\na very present help in trouble. <\/span>
\nFor those mourning and rebuilding after the storms,
\nGod is their refuge. <\/span>
\nFor those living in fear of their neighbours,
\nGod is their strength. <\/span>
\nFor those dreading the hiss of a drone-fired missile,
\nGod is present. <\/span>
\nFor the distraught and displaced and dismembered
\nin Syria, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere,
\nGod is a very present help in trouble. <\/span>
\nTherefore, we will not fear.
\nTherefore, we will lay down our weapons
\nand worship our God.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n

In case you were curious about the last line, in her blogpost<\/a> Joanna Haradar writes: <\/p>\n

\n*A note on the last line of the call to worship: Psalm 46:10 is generally translated as, \u201cBe still and know that I am God.\u201d The Hebrew term translated as \u201cbe still\u201d (raphah<\/em>) more accurately means \u201clet drop, let go, abandon.\u201d It is a call for disarmament, not a request for silent meditation.<\/div>\n
