\nOn 25 February (Lent 2) I preached in my home church<\/a> in Rotterdam. One of the strands of my sermon was about being in “God’s waiting room”, like Abraham and Sarah<\/a> were.<\/p>\n

As part of my sermon I shared this helpful comment from an article by Pete Wilson entitled \u201cThe Spiritual Benefits of Waiting<\/a>\u201d. He writes: \u201cFaithful waiting involves actively seeking contentment<\/strong>, even amid less-than-optimal circumstances.\u201d <\/p>\n

Here is a prayer entitled “Waiting” by Jonny Baker<\/strong> that looks to God to help us in the waiting, as he helped countless before us.<\/p>\n

Waiting<\/h3>\n

As Sarah waited…Ninety years for a son to fulfill God’s promise.
\nWe wait in hope for what we thought had been spoken to us.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Moses waited…40 years in the desert,
\nbeing prepared by God to lead his people.
\nWe wait for emptiness and humility;
\nfor bravado to wither.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Israel waited…40 years of wandering,
\nhungry, depressed, thirsting, unsure.
\nWe wait for the right time to act.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the Prophets waited…1000 years of promises
\nthat God would raise up a Saviour.
\nWe wait for the signs that God has not forgotten.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Mary waited…9 months of her 14 years for the child of God.
\nWe feel the birth-pains, yet fear for the child.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As John the Baptist waited…
\nScanning the crowds for the one whose sandals
\nhe would not be worthy to untie.
\nWe long for an experience of the Divine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Jesus waited… 30 years of creeping time.
\n40 days in the desert of temptation.
\n3 years of misunderstanding.
\n3 days in the depths of hell.<\/p>\n

So we wait for God’s time.
\nPreparing the way.
\nOur turn to toil on leveling mountains
\nand straightening paths.
\nOur turn to watch the horizon.
\nOur turn to pass on the hope
\nthat He who promised is faithful and will come back.<\/strong><\/p>\n
