This illustration dates from 2003, created to accompany a tribute to the “angels on assignment” who ministered to my dad and my family when we met up in Cape Town for a last Christmas together just weeks before my dad died. The illustration features a wood-carving that I bought during that trip and that now hangs in my front window.<\/em><\/div>\n

\nHere is a prayer by Bruce Prewer<\/strong> for all those angels, human and heavenly, ministering in needy situations here on earth.<\/p>\n

Prayer of Intercession<\/h3>\n

The word angel originally meant \u201cmessenger.\u201d
\nFor God\u2019s angels on this earth,
\nlet us now pray.<\/p>\n

 
\nWe thank you, loving God,
\nthat you do not leave us without helpers.
\nThank you for your special agents, those guardian angels \u2014
\nboth human and heavenly \u2014 who never cease to care.<\/p>\n

Wherever there are situations of confusion,
\nwhere doubts proliferate and anxieties spawn,
\nplease send in your angels of light<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever people are crippled by guilt,
\nor deeply regret damage to others which they can never rectify,
\nsend in your angels of mercy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever there is arrogance and deceit,
\ncorruption and rapacious greed,
\nsend in your fiery angels of judgement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever ignorance reigns
\nor superstition cripples individuals or communities,
\nplease send in your angels of truth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever persons or nations become obsessed with aggression,
\nor resort to terrorism and warfare,
\nsend in your agents of peace and goodwill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever families are at loggerheads,
\nor in the workplace folk feel alienated from one another,
\nsend in your angels of reconciliation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever people see their future as bleak or dangerous,
\nand fall into the trap of inertia or despair,
\nplease send in your angels of hope<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever the church becomes exclusive,
\nor gets caught up in its own regulations,
\n      traditions, or inflexible dogma,
\nsend in your angels of reformation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever ministers lose their passion for the Gospel,
\nor congregations become self-satisfied or apathetic,
\nplease send in your angels of rebuke<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever there are people who are afflicted by disease
\nor injured in accidents,
\nstruggle against mental ills
\nor suffer from criminal violence,
\nsend in your angels of healing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wherever the dying endure fears or pain,
\nand the bereaved either shed the hot tears of a fresh grief
\nor endure the long-term loss of a partner or friend,
\nsend in your angels of comfort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Loving God,
\nLord of all the messengers of grace on earth and in heaven,
\nhear our prayers and enlist us, please God,
\nwithin the ranks of your caring angels<\/strong>.
\nThrough Jesus Christ your only True Son,
\nour Saviour and our inspiration.
\nAmen!<\/p>\n
