I came across this prayer in my copy of 2000 Years of Prayer<\/em><\/a> (compiled by Michael Counsell). I was particularly taken with the down-to-earth, practical spirituality that ministers to you as you engage with the prayer.<\/p>\n

\nLord, teach me to pray.
\nIt sounds exciting, put like that.
\nIt sounds real. An exploration.
\nA chance to do more than catalogue
\nand list the things I want,
\nto an eternal Father Christmas.<\/p>\n

The chance of meeting you,
\nof drawing closer to the love that made me,
\nand keeps me, and knows me.
\nAnd, Lord, it’s only just begun.
\nThere is so much more of you,
\nof love, the limitless expanse of knowing you.
\nI could be frightened, Lord, in this wide country.
\nIt could be lonely, but you are here, with me.<\/p>\n

The chance of learning about myself,
\nof facing up to what I am.
\nAdmitting my resentments,
\nbringing my anger to you, my disappointments, my frustration.
\nAnd finding that when l do,
\nwhen I stop struggling and shouting
\nand let go
\nyou are still there.
\nStill loving.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, Lord, often –
\nI don’t know what to say to you.
\nBut I still come, in quiet
\nfor the comfort of two friends
\nsitting in silence.
\nAnd it’s then, Lord, that I learn most from you.
\nWhen my mind slows down,
\nand my heart stops racing.
\nWhen I let go and wait in the quiet,
\nrealizing that all the things I was going to ask for
\nyou know already.
\nThen, Lord, without words,
\nin the stillness
\nyou are there . . .

From his obituary in The Guardian (2007)<\/strong>
\n\u201cEddie Askew, the former general director of the Leprosy Mission (TLM) \u2026 devoted half a century to the disease and its consequences. \u2026
\nInspired by his travels and his Christian faith, Eddie found an outlet for his creativity in painting and poetry. A Silence and a Shouting<\/em>, his first book of meditations and artwork, was published in 1982. It was followed, over the years, by 16 others, and the sale of his books and paintings raised around \u00a32.5m for TLM.\u201d (The Guardian) whole article<\/a><\/p>\n
