\nIf you search on the word rest<\/strong> you’ll discover, as I did, that it appears in all kinds of unrelated words, like interested<\/strong>, forest<\/strong>, wrestling<\/strong> and restore<\/strong> – each word containing a world of meaning of its own. <\/p>\n

I like that unrest<\/strong> and restlessness<\/strong> are somehow related, and yet substantially different. Unrest<\/strong> generally has negative connotations, while restlessness<\/strong> has mixed overtones. A holy restlessness<\/strong> and an unholy restlessness<\/strong> are both feasible, but unrest<\/strong> feels far removed from God’s good intentions for us and the world. Still unrest<\/strong> might be a truer reflection of what is going on under the surface, and God has been known to use unrest<\/strong> to bring about necessary change.<\/p>\n

Here is a morning prayer by Dietrich Bonhoeffer<\/strong> that features both restless<\/strong> and restore<\/strong>. In prayer we can bridge the two.

Morning prayer<\/h3>\n

O God,
\nearly in the morning I cry to you.
\nHelp me to pray,
\nand to concentrate my thoughts on you:
\nI cannot do this alone.<\/p>\n

In me there is darkness,
\nbut with you there is light;
\nI am lonely, but you do not leave me;
\nI am feeble in heart, but with you there is help;
\nI am restless, but with you there is peace.
\nIn me there is bitterness, but with you there is patience;
\nI do not understand your ways,
\nbut you know the way for me \u2026<\/p>\n

Restore me to liberty,
\nand enable me so to live now
\nthat I may answer before you and before men.
\nLord, whatever this day may bring,
\nYour name be praised.
\nAmen.
