songs in scripture
As you probably know, at the heart of the Bible there is an ancient songbook, known as The Book of Psalms. The songs span several centuries. Some are attributed to well-known Biblical figures such as David and Moses; others are attributed to members of priestly families (the sons of Korah and the family of Asaph). At least fifty of the psalms are anonymous.
But, besides this magnificent collection of Hebrew songs, the Bible contains other songs.
Here is a short list:
- Song of Moses and Miriam: Exodus 15:1-19
- Song of Deborah and Barak: Judges 5
- Song of Hannah: 1 Samuel 2:1-10
- Song of David: 2 Samuel 22:2-51; 23:1-7 (cf Psalm 18)
- Song of Mary: Luke 1:46-55
- Song of Moses and the Lamb: Revelation 15:3-4
- Philippians 2:6-11 (traditionally known as the Carmen Christi) could also be the lyrics of a song used in the early Church and inserted into Paul's letter to illustrate and reinforce a point.
