two criteria for a good christian song

Firstly, the song must be Biblically sound, and secondly edifying.

Biblically sound. This relates to the spiritual content of the song, and the relative weight it gives to the spiritual truths contained in the lyrics. The song mustn't major on minors. Also, the message must be well formulated and grounded in the Scriptures.

Edifying. This principle assumes the first principles is true, because a song can't edify if the words are sentimental, superficial or blatantly unscriptural. But it adds another dimension, namely the song's connection to its "audience". The song should create a bridge between their world and the spiritual realm. This is only possible if they grasp something of the significance of what they are singing about - i.e. if the lyrics and style of the song match their world.
