A story to tell songs

Introduction

This collection contains a series of 12 songs in a singer-songwriter style based on stories from the Old Testament. A primary source of inspiration (alongside the Biblical text) was Nico ter Linden's The Story Goes series. I have a Dutch book with a selection of stories from the series, and I would take a story at random and attempt to translate it into a song, from the perspective of a central or sometimes fringe character.

My aim was to write a song that works independent of the source text, reflecting something universal. At the same time, I hope those who know the Biblical story (well) will be "rewarded". Whatever your background, I hope the songs intrigue and move you as the listener.

I chose the stories at random, but two Biblical characters feature prominently in the series: Moses (including a song about the golden calf, from Aaron's perspective) and Elijah. The whole series I've entitled A story to tell, which is the title of a song about Jacob wrestling with the angel.
