Prayer poem: Not unless

a prayer poem inspired by Psalm 25:1-10 – the psalm set for the first Sunday in Lent, Year B
written on 13 February 2021, during an online creative day hosted by United Adoration
many of the sections are based on verses from the Bible that feature the word ‘ways’

Not unless

by Irene Bom

‘Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.’ (Psalm 25:4)

Eternal One, holy and mysterious,
my ways are not your ways;
not unless your ways mark my ways
through and through;

not unless I renounce
those secret and shameful ways of before
and You eradicate every spore
of their corruption;

not unless my obstinate
and perverted inclinations
yield;

not unless my hardened heart
breaks;

not unless my imagination
is clarified to reveal
the true colours
of your creative kindness;

not unless I learn to tread your paths
with care and wide-eyed wonder
at your vision for even me
as one of the redeemed.

Eternal One, loving and faithful,
teach me, school me in your ways;
train my heart, my will, my imagination
till I am wholly patterned after you.
